The espresso boiler is the basis of your coffee machine. Making the right choice is fundamental to your set-up
Your espresso machine may be the single largest investment you will make in your home coffee pipeline. There are a number of considerations to make to ensure you build an efficient system. At the heart of any espresso machine is its boiler and herein lies your most critical decision point. It is first worth mentioning that any one of the three can produce a superior cup of coffee but which of the three truly fits your need (and budget)?
In this article I cover the three categories (single-boiler, dual-boiler and heat exchanger), providing you with all the key information, along with recommendations (and rationales) within each category. I have also indicated relative price brackets:
Lower-end
Mid-range
Premium
So, without further ado, let’s explore…

Summary
In broad terms, single-boilers are simpler, relatively limited in their output and lower in cost. Dual-boiler systems are capable of higher-volume output and efficiencies at a higher price, and heat exchangers strike a balance between the two – both in price and functionality.
There are cheaper machines on the market and more expensive ones. They tend respectively to offer less or more functionality and durability. The models recommended here hit all the appropriate notes of functionality, in-home volume output, robustness and reasonable affordability in each category.
There are others that could have made the cut and I would be interested in any recommendations you would like to make based on your own experience. Also, be sure to comment on the models presented here.
