The Darling Beans of May

Apr 25, 2024

So, here is May. How did that happen? Time flies when you are busy. Ironic that when you need time most, if flies.

Spring. One of the things that does not spring eternal. Here at Bean Indigo, we hunkered down to the cross tensions of building the community we share with you while ensuring there are always more and better reasons for you to participate – all this as we grasp every chance to get out and realize the promises of the season. As always, we are on the hunt for insights and update in all key categories (Coffee Production, Beverage Preparation, Sniffing out the latest Equipment Trends and Innovations, etc.)

This month’s content focus has been to provide answers to your most common questions and interests. Here are the Top 10 (in no specific order):

  1. The geographic origins of coffee
  2. Producers of the dominant single-origin coffees
  3. Diving into the most popular brewing techniques
  4. The science and craft of coffee roasting
  5. Detailing and differentiating the dominant coffee varietals
  6. The mechanics of coffee grindiing
  7. How do develop a refined palette
  8. Navigating the bewildering array of coffee equipment on the market
  9. The history and contemporary context of “coffee culture”
  10. The ethical and environmental responsibilities of the coffee industry and us all

Our equipment and prep process guru, Darren Luft and the ever-intrepid man in the field, Ramon Siever have been pulling long hours over the past four weeks sharing their insights from years of industrial and personal practice. I highly recommend familiarizing yourself with their work. They live for feedback, so lay it on!

Looking forward, we will pick off each of the topic areas listed above with contributions from our full writing staff. Book and equipment reviews, taste tests, coffee networking, and more.

We also plan to launch our premier equipment selections for the home barista – a fluid and ongoing survey of all the market has to offer. Stay tuned for an update mid-month.

Until then, read, share, comment and subscribe. Happy May!
