Coffee Code of Conduct

Feb 19, 2024

Bean Indigo has no rules…until they are broken. We welcome all constructive contributions and have put together the following coffee code of conduct to help navigate the ambiguity.

We all understand that coffee appreciation is a personal thing. Because of that, there are no wrong answers. If there is a particular varietal you love, love it. If there is one with seemingly universal acclaim and you dislike it, no problem.

Despite this, it remains our objective to explore trends and preferences in beans, preparation gear and methods. We present that for your consideration, but there are areas (read: peeves) where our preferences mean we will not explore in any detail. These include, but are not limited to:

De-caf: We completely understand that for some decaffeinated beverage is a preference and for others it is a physiological necessity. It is just not our thing.

Pod Coffee: Our goal is artisanship. Pods and K-cups get our faculties buzzing with universality and group-think. When a cup of coffee is effectively reduced to “just add hot water”, our eyes glaze over. So too with,

Instant Coffee: It was an amazing innovation back in the day, and the quality of the product has improved over time, but until we abandon Plant Earth, we leave it to the astronauts. Again, if it is your thing, no judgement. Go for it. We remain uniquely unqualified to comment.

Fully Automated Preparation: There is something beguiling and decadent about owning a system that presents the “perfect” cup at the push of a button. There is also something subbornly anachronistic about doing it yourself when you could just push a button. For better or worse, our preference is for the latter.

Coffee IS a Flavor: There is a company we all know and owe an extreme debt of gratitude for having globalized coffee appreciation. Unfortunately, they are not a coffee shop; rather, they are a confectionary where coffee is a flavor ingredient infused into a range of sugared and spiced drinks. At Bean Indigo, coffee is first and foremost a flavor with many facets and dimensions. THAT is our focus.

Fads and Fashions: We will explore them and celebrate their influence on the culture at large and the culture of coffee in particular. We will call them out where they lack value or weight. But never will we stand in the way of fun and fair game. Apologies if any of this seems snarky. While we may eskew these areas, we do not judge those who go there. To each their own. If we discuss them at all, it will be peripherally. Lord knows, we all have our guilty pleasures and most are not even reasons for guilt.

There are reasons for criticism in the world, and coffee is not one of them. Knowing why you make the (coffee) choices you do is the first step in owning your preferences (and rejections). Ignorance is disqualifying, and that is where we come in.

Coffee Code of Conduct – It Gets Heated

We are passionate about our love of coffee. We hold strong opinions and we expect you do too.

When engaging in the comments and discussions appearing here, we ask that you please be considerate of others and their (opposing) opinions. Play nice and we all are richer for the discourse!
